Science Performance of Filipino Students in PISA 2018: A Call for Improvement
Trisha Mae D. Chu
ABSTRACT

In the year 2018, the Philippines joined the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the first time to assess students about their education. However, results show that the Philippines ranked 2nd to the last in Science Literacy. In line with this, this paper established a comprehensive investigation and provide the factors behind the poor performance of students in science and provide possible recommendations on how to resolve them. Based on the data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for PISA 2018 and from the Philippine National Report provided by the Department of Education, three out of seven main points were carefully discussed in this paper: Philippines having a mean score of 357 which is remarkably much lower than the average provided by OECD which is 489 in Science; students from private schools had an average score of 399 points in Scientific Literacy and this was significantly higher than the performance of the students from public schools which is averaged at 347 points; and there was an average of 370 points for the performance of students in Science Literacy from urban areas and an average of 333 points for those who came from rural ones. Factors that could possibly be the reasons behind the results were also discussed such as recruitment of science teachers, lack of resources and laboratories, curriculum evaluation and teaching pedagogy. At the end of the paper, recommendations are also suggested that might contribute in addressing the said factors.
Appreciating Ability Beyond Disability:
A Reflection Paper About Inclusive Education
Trisha Mae D. Chu
ABSTRACT

Children with disabilities are one of the most marginalized and excluded groups not only in the society but most of all, in the education system. Even though they attend school, they are still less like to finish primary or secondary education. Thus, this implicates that they are not only neglected with education rather they are receiving unfair terms when it comes to the life and opportunities denied to these children. This paper primarily focuses on the advocacy about inclusive education. Specifically, it aims to promote equality, social acceptance, protection and security to those children who are experiencing disabilities and other forms of exceptionalities. The group of student advocates made a data gathering through survey of those people who were able to watch and finish the video advocacy made by them which was uploaded on Youtube. A total of 92 respondents answered the survey form. Findings showed that most of the people are already aware about the inclusion of the CWDs and PWDs in the community and in education system. However, the few individuals who contradicted the results should be given much more attention to realize the need of inclusion in the society. Thus, the student advocates concluded that there is a need for stronger and wider spread of advocacies about inclusion to further address those individuals who still cannot understand the importance of inclusion in the society.
Documents of the 1898 Declaration of Philippine Independence, The Malolos Constitution and the First Philippine Republic: A Review
Trisha Mae D. Chu
Depicting the history of the realm’s liberation, the topic that was given to me expressed how the Philippines gained its independence from the Spaniards which colonized the country for more than three centuries. Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, which was the first adviser to the President Emilio Aginaldo, on the other hand, wrote the Act of Philippine Independence. He wrote this piece to hearten, motivate and persuade Filipinos to fight for justice and to contest their freedom from the Spanish invaders. Also, the topic shows how the Philippines coped from the colonization, beginning with the landing of Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan in 1521 up to the defeat of Spaniards from Filipinos and Americans in 1898, which led to the formation of the basic law of the Philippines, the Malolos Constitution and soon, the First Philippine Republic which was a nascent revolutionary government of the country that time.
Assessing Beyond Test Scores: A Position Paper About Authentic Assessment
Trisha Mae D. Chu
Education is undeniably changing on a global scale and the learners of today are probably the great sponsors of a better tomorrow. Teaching them to be good members of the society and assessing them on what, how and up to what extent did they already learn is part of the process. Assessment, in any form, is one of the effective tools in measuring the progress the students in the education system. In today’s context, there is a great demand of globally competitive learners that are equipped with different skills like creativity, critical thinking, communication and innovation skills. Standardized assessment, which is used for several generations, really showed that it is a reliable and objective form of assessment that it doesn’t involve to any human bias or subjectivity. Moreover, it is an assessment tool which looks at every learner with equality. However, it can be discriminatory at some aspects of measuring the abilities and potentials of the students beyond the scores they are getting. Thus, it is quite the right time to give emphasis on authentic assessment in this changing paradigm because 21st century education is about molding the students to be able to adapt the context of today’s world.
